Week in Review

I took photos early this past week, and it seems like a lifetime ago.  I will try to reach deep into the recesses of my mind and recreate the story behind the photos.

Ah, yes, it's coming back to me now.  These photos are mostly of the "Back Forty".  Maybe I should have named this blog, "Garden Happenings"!

This picture was taken Monday morning after the garden was freshly weeded on Sunday morning.  Everything looks great!

The lettuce looks wonderful and has almost doubled in size this week.  I'll be picking fresh lettuce for the first time tomorrow.

Not one blemish on the scrumptious looking leaves!

The carrots look great, too, even though they are sparsely planted.  I imagine they will have plenty of room to get large, and I left room for a second planting.  It's gotten hot and humid the last few days, so I'll wait until next week when it will probably be a little cooler.

I got 5 pathetic looking spinach plants from those old seeds, but if they produce, that will be plenty!

The cucumbers are growing well, and the center plant has sprouted a runner!  Now if I can just get it trained to climb the fence....

The compost is rich, and dark, and I pulled a several cups out to spread around some of my green bean plants.  I only put it on three rows to see if it makes a difference.

I read that peppers love added sulfur, and thrive when kitchen matches are placed into the soil around them.  We'll see how that works!  The pepper plants on the left have not grown very much, and I noticed that the few peppers that were forming dried and fell off the plant.  I think that I've been so paranoid about over-watering that I, in fact, have been under watering.  I'm watering the box every morning now.  It doesn't seem to retain moisture well, and I think I may have gone a little overboard with drainage holes!  Oh, well.  I'm calling "learning curve"!

Monday evening was so cool that I was thinking SWEATER!  It felt more like fall, and it looked like it could even snow the way the clouds were coming in from the north west.

It really was a gorgeous evening that felt mystical and special.  Here's the sun setting through the pine trees.

It's hot and humid today, and I'm just returning from Collen's baby shower.  (Yes, slash my wrist!  I really don't like that girly stuff.)  I stayed for 3 hours, and she was STILL opening shower gifts.  I couldn't take anymore, so here I am at home in the comfort of the AC!

Well, that's it for this week.  I'll be taking more photos of the garden - a lot has happened in a week!  Maybe I'll have something more exciting to report in the next post, but if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath!

  1. It looks like the cucumbers are going to produce well. Like you said, try to train them to climb UP the fence, not UNDER it :). That lettuce looks very yummy, and the carrots are going to be interesting in their size. The match head tip is pretty killer; it's a new one to me! I think we might attempt growing a pineapple plant on the terrace. It's perfect weather for it!

  2. Yes - the cucumbers are doing really well and seem to like the fence just fine! I heard pineapples are relatively easy to grow. You & Nadia should give it a try, but after all your travels. I hear it "never rains in sunny California" (yes, song lyrics :)
